How To Downgrade iPhone, iPod Touch And iPad  From iOS 5.1 To iOS 5.0.1, iOS 4.3.3 or older. Right after Apple’s latest tablet came out of the dark, the new iOS with major software update, iOS 5.1, was available for millions to download on iTunes. A lot of new features are included in this iOS version of which are: the fixed camera button on the lock screen, Japanese language support for Siri, and most importantly some major bug fixes such as the battery drainage problem faced with iOS 5 we have all been hearing about.

Downgrade iOS 5.1 To 5.0.1 , 4.3.3 or Older :

Apple released iOS 5.1 update for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G, iPad 1, iPad 2, and iPad 3.

For those have already installed iOS 5.0.1 to their devices, Apple released an OTA update for you. However, those who have jailbroken devices will not be able to benefit from the OTA update.

Can I downgrade my device back to iOS 5.0.1 if I found out that iOS 5.1 doesn’t suit me?

Of course you can downgrade your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad from iOS 5.1 to iOS 5.0.1 or iOS 4.x.x. However, if your device has an A5 chip (like the one in the iPhone 4S and iPad2), then you will not be able to downgrade your device.

For those of you who have iOS 5.0.1 jailbroken, and are interested in keeping their device jailbroken, we do not advise you to update your operating system to iOS 5.! Up to this point, no jailbreaks are available for iOS 5.1.

If you are one of the lucky people who can downgrade your device whenever you feel like it (this means you have either an iPad 1, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G or iPod touch 4G) we can help you downgrade your device. All you need is non A5 iOS device that you want to downgrade, iTunes, saved SHSH blobs of the iOS version you want to downgrade our device to, the latest version of Redsn0w and IPSW restore file of the iOS firmware you want your device to be downgraded to.  Just follow the simple few steps below.

How To Downgrade iPhone, iPod Touch And iPad  From iOS 5.1 To iOS 5.0.1, iOS 4.3.3 For Untethered Jailbreak:

How To Downgrade, From iOS 5.1 To iOS 5.0.1, iOS 4.3.3, Untethered Jailbreak

Step 1: Run the latest version of Redsn0w that you downloaded previously.

Step 2: Click Extras, you will see a different Redsn0w menu, click Pwned DFU.

Step 3: Connect your device to the computer and switch it off

Step 4: Put your device in DFU mode

To enter DFU mode:

  • Hold Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds
  • Now release the Power button but continue holding the Home button for 10 more seconds
  • You device should now be in DFU mode (black screen)

Step 5: Redsn0w will now exploit your iOS device with limera1n DFU exploit

Step 6: Windows users navigate to \Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ and Mac users need to launch Finder and navigate to /etc/.

Downgrade iOS 5.1 to iOS 5.0.1 4.3.3

Step 7: Windows users should locate hosts file, drag and drop it to Desktop. Open the hosts file by using your favorite editor (use Notepad) and add the line below at the bottom of the file:

74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

Then, save the file and place it back in \etc\ folder

Mac users should simply open hosts file using TextEdit, add the above line (same one used by windows users) at the bottom and save the file. (There is no need to move it to desktop)

Step 8: Launch iTunes, it will recognize your iOS device in recovery mode. Now we’re going to restore the IPSW file which you downloaded from the link above

  • Windows users: Press Shift+Restore
  • Mac OS X users: Press Alt+Restore

iTunes will ask you to select the firmware you want to restore, point iTunes to your desired firmware file (which you downloaded earlier)

You’re all done. Just sit back for a while and watch as iTunes downgrades your device.
